An Experimental Farm with a Long History
The precursor of the NTU Experimental Farm was established in 1924. During Japanese Colonial Period, it was the Practice Farm of Taihoku ( Taipei ) High School of Agriculture and Forestry. In 1928, Taihoku Imperial University -the predecessor of the present University-was founded and the Farm was an affiliated organization of Taihoku Imperial University . In 2002, the College of Agriculture was renamed as the College of Bio-Resources and Agriculture in response to the change of time and environment. Furthermore, the Farm was renamed as the Affiliated Experimental Farm to the College of Bio-Resources and Agriculture of National Taiwan University. The Administration Building and the Agronomy Plot of the Farm are located within the southeast corner of the main campus with the area of 5.77 hectares . the 3.5-hectare Horticulture Plot is located on the foot of Chan-chu Mountain with the area of 3.5 hectares. The address of Animal Husbandry Plot is No. 50, Lane 155, Section 3, Keelung Road with the area of 2 hectares. Its address is the same as Department of Animal Science and Technology. The Ankeng Branch is in the Ankeng district of Sindian City with the area of 19.1 hectares. The total area of Experimental Farm is 30.37 hectares.
An Educational Farm with Beautiful Surroundings and Multiple Purposes
It is a gorgeous farmland in Taipei city . The Farm is blessed with a beautiful environment and abundant ecological diversities. In the earl y years, the Farm was mainly for teaching, students practice, tests and researches in the campus and provided necessary materials to various testing organizations. In recent years, the Farm has become a popular site of ecological education for the nearby high schools and elementary schools since people pay more attentions on the concept of ecological education and the reasons such as convenient transportation, bountiful resources, and excellent faculty staffs. Ecological education, therefore, has been a major subject of extension education program of Experimental Farm .
Major Features and Roles
1. A site for teaching and student practice
For e ach semester, courses like Hands-on Experience of Modern Agriculture and Hands-on Experience of Pastoral Life are provid ed for students of NTU . Land is also available to support the student practice courses of relevant departments.
2. Offering the land and materials for tests and researches
The Farm supports testing and research programs of other institutions that are conducted on the Farm. It also provides test animals, blood serum and other tissues for the College of Medicine and other life science-related institutions.
3. Demonstrative operation
The Agricultural Products Exhibition Center of the Farm sells not only homemade products from the Farm, but also products developed by the instructors and students of the College of Bio-Resources and Agriculture. The Center also invites superior farmers' associations in Taiwan to promote their high-quality agricultural and special products to benefit the NTU personnel and students. The products produced and sold by the Farm include rice, bread, popsicles, ice cream sandwich, radish, a variety of health tea, juices, instant shao-xiancao (a hot herbal jelly), milk, goat milk, yogurt, meat balls, preserved meat and sausages. These high-quality products meet the rigorous safety and hygiene standards and are popular in campus.
4. Extension education
The Farm has an ecological pond, a crop specimen park, and cultivation zones for flowers, vegetables and fruits . There are cows, goats, pigs, chickens and ducks as well . These abundant resources are the excellent learning environment for NTU teachers and students. Seminars are held from time to time . The tour guide is provided by the Farm to offer people an opportunity of recharging and further learning.
5. Services within and out of campus
In addition to carrying out some of the beautification projects on the campus, the Farm also provides counseling services on the diagnosis of pests and diseases of plants help ing people to solve their problems.
A Bountiful and Intellectual Trip of Learning
Tour guide services are provided on the Agronomy, Horticulture and Animal Husbandry Plots. The tests and researches are the most significant difference between Experimental Farm and other recreational farms. Therefore, Experimental Farm plays a very important role in the academic field as well as in extension education.
‧ The Agronomy Plot
You can see m ore than one hundred kinds of seasonal crops in the Farm including corn, rice, wheat, sweat potato, taro, tea trees, coffee trees, tobacco, sugarcane, sun flowers, rape, Asiatic lily , and so on . There are also various herbs, aquatic plants and butterfly-attracting plants. You might be amazed by the butterflies, birds and frogs when you visit the Experimental Farm.
‧ The Horticulture Plot
T he Horticulture Plot is located a t the foot of Chan-chu Mountain . It is a bountiful ecological system. You can see o rdinary flowers and vegetables . Also , Little Egrets and Tiger Bitterns can be seen searching for food in the field. Furthermore, it is common to see toads, dragonflies, and frogs here. You e ven can see the butterflies coupling as well . If you hear the barking sound please don't be panic . It's the mating call of a Gunther's frog. Isn't it interesting? ‧ The Animal Husbandry Plot
It is not only supporting student practical training course but also offering experimental materials including the dairy cows, goats, pigs, chickens and ducks for several research institutes in north Taiwan area. The milk production is about 500-600 kilograms per day. Since the milk is fresh, pure and nutritious, it is usually out of supply.
‧ The Ankang Branch
It is located in Ankeng district of Xindian City with the area of 19.1 hectares and planned to be transformed into a park for ecological education. There are rice and grass produced in the Branch. It will open for booking the tour guide service and visiting when the ecological pond and the recreational service areas are completed. The theme of the tour will emphasize on education al ecological systems, in contrast to what you'll find in the Agronomy Plot, which is on agricultural ecology.
