Brief Introduction

¡@In the past, the College of Agriculture has played a major role in the honorable history of Taiwan¡¦s agriculture.In the future, the College of Bio-Resources and Agriculture will continue to make contributions to our country and people.

¡@The antecedent of the College of Bio-Resources and Agriculture was the Department of Science and Agriculture of Taihoku (Taipei) ImperialUniversity.The Department was renamed as the College of Agriculture after Taiwan¡¦s retrocession to Chinese Sovereignty.In 2002, the College was again renamed as the College of Bio-Resources and Agriculture in the consideration of coping with the impact brought by WTO and the change in the socio-economic condition as well as in industry.

¡@The College now includes thirteen departments and graduate institutes that provide both Master and PhD programs.Nevertheless, we have eight affiliated units assisting the College in practical training, research, and extension.Currently, we have nearly 260 faculties and 3,800 students.Our alumni work in all facet of the career area and contribute greatly to the communities and industry.

¡@Guided by the mission of the higher education, our main objectives are revealed in the following aspects:

  • Instruction: to cope with the needs of the bio-resource industry, we strive to cultivate promising professionals through providing research-based programs and encouraging the innovation in biotechnology.
  • Research: in the hope of conserving our environment, we will apply the latest result of the bio-resource investigations and utilize the biotechnology to develop the organic agriculture.We hope to lead the local bio-resource and agricultural research to achieve excellence.
  • Extension: to improve the quality of both life and environment, we provide extension service and information on technological management.We also work on increasing the public understanding of the biological resource and thus earning the public support of the green industry.

¡@The efforts of our faculties and staff have long been deeply appreciated by the public.Now let us briefly introduce each department and unit.


Department of Agronomy
¡@The Department of Agronomy is the eldest research and education unit in the College of Agriculture.The Department consists of three sections: Crop Physiology and Management, Genetics and Breeding, and Biometry.Since the traditional agronomy aims at increasing the yields and quality of the crop, the Department used to stress on incubating manpower of crop science and conducting researches for the improvement of the yields and quality of crops.To cope with the recent advances in biotechnology, molecular biology, and information technology, the research interests now extend to functional genetics, genetic engineering, molecular breeding, precision agriculture, and bioinformatics.Nonetheless, the Department provides new courses focusing on the modernization of crop management, biotechnology, genetic resources management, and on bioinformatics.Students will receive trainings in these areas and will be capable of devoting themselves to academic research, extension, or administration. They are expected to elevate the agricultural level of our country.


Department of Bioenvironmental Systems Engineering

¡@The antecedent of the Department was the Agricultural Engineering Chairs of Taihoku Imperial University, and it is not until 1949 that the Department of Agricultural Engineering was officially established. In 2001, the Department was renamed as ¡§Department of Bioenvironmental Systems Engineering¡¨ in the consideration of coping with the social condition and integrating more research fields.

¡@The Department provides undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs.Currently, the Department has 23 faculty members, 170 undergraduate students, and 140 graduate students.The Department also establishes several laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities.

¡@At present the Department consists of three main research groups that focuses on (1) Bioenvironmental Engineering (2) Ecological Engineering ¡® Soil and Water Resources and (3) Bioenvironmental Systems ¡® Information.The faculty¡¦s research ability has been immensely appreciated.Over the past few years, more than 60 research projects proposed are granted. Nonetheless, the Department closely collaborates with the Agricultural Engineering Research Center and the Hydrotech Research Institute of National Taiwan University.


Department of Agricultural Chemistry

¡@The Department of Agricultural Chemistry has long been aimed at cultivating innovative and outstanding specialists in biotechnology and environmental science.Over the past decades, the Department has trained countless technologists by providing a modernized, diversified, and specialized education.In the future, the Department will integrate the following areas with the recent research interests: namely, Soil Science and Environmental Science, Plant Physiology and Chemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology, and Bio-resource Utilization.

¡@With regard to the design of the program, the Department focuses on basic scientific education such as biology and chemistry, and the program will be adjusted according to the concepts of modern scientific education and international research trends.The diversification of the curriculum, the emphasis on reading research papers, and the initiation of seminars will also be the remarkable features of the program.Under the instruction of the faculty and with the help of the well-equipped study environment, students are expected to be specialists in biotechnology, bio-resources development, phytochemical products, and environmental protection.


Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology

¡@The teaching in Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology primarily includes plant pathology, microbiology, and molecular genetics. The research activities used to be fully attentive to four major plant pathogenic microorganisms, interactions between pathogens and their hosts, physiology, ecology, pathogenicity and epidemiology of pathogenic microorganisms, integrated control of plant diseases, and biological control. In the recent years, the research focuses have been extended to biodiversity, conservation, molecular evolution of microorganisms, rapid identification system of pathogenic microorganisms, mycotoxins, microbiological formulations, and the exploitation, application, and mass production of fungal secondary metabolites. Students will not only learn the fundamental knowledge of plant pathology and microbiology, but they will also receive solid training in basic and applied microbiological research.


Department of Entomology

¡@The Department of Entomology aims at training qualified entomologists to serve the communities and society.To achieve this goal, the Department provides faculty members and students the state-of-art facilities and strives to create a comfortable atmosphere for study and research.Nonetheless, courses in three expertise programs are offered: namely, integrated insect-pest management, biodiversity and biotechnology.

¡@Regarding the research activities, the recent projects focus on the following areas: (1) insect pest control of agricultural importance related to plant and animal health; (2) medical and urban entomology; (3) useful and beneficial insects; (4) environmental pollution; (5) conservation of biodiversity; and (6) application of biotechnology in entomology. The Department also establishes laboratories to facilitate the advancing of the research on insect taxonomy, physiology, ecology, behavior, bio-conservation, insect systematics collection, and agricultural entomology.


Department of Forestry and Resource

¡@The research areas of Department of Forestry can be glossly classified as Forestry and Wood Production, which include Resource Management and Administration, Forestation, Forest Resource Conservation, and Forest Industry.Conforming with the official forestry policy and the needs of the industry, the main objective of the Department is to cultivate specialists not only in the management of the natural resources but also in the management of forestry industry.The faculties show a high enthusiasm for research.A number of research projects are proposed or proceeding every year; students are allowed to join these projects. With regard to the collaboration with official forestry units, the Department has successfully solved many problems for the forestry authorities.


Department of Animal Science

¡@Located on NTU campus near Kee-lung Road, the total area of Department of Animal Science measures a little more than two hectares, which is designed as a multi-functional park for both research and recreation.Traditionally, the Department focuses on training specialists on animal science, but currently the Department aims at integrating biotechnology into the present discipline.To cope with this change, the Department plans to upgrade the research facilities and to engage in reorganization.Not only will a new research building be provided, but several affiliate units will be founded to facilitate instruction and research, such as a genetic transplantation center, a molecular farm, and an experimental animal center.Meanwhile, the Department will continue to encourage research activities and enhance the management of companion animals and experimental animals.With these adjustments and efforts, the Department hopes to cultivate more competent professionals to meet the needs of both the industry and academia.


Department of Veterinary Medicine

¡@For those who want to specialize in veterinary medicine, Department of Veterinary Medicine offers solid discipline in both theory and practice.The courses offered covers the following areas: veterinary physiology, anatomy, pathology, pharmacology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, immunology, public health, infectious diseases, clinical pathology, anesthesiology, swine medicine, poultry medicine, aquatic medicine, equine medicine, large animal medicine, wild-life diseases, small animal medicine and surgery, small animal oncology, ophthalmology, neuropathology, endocrinology, diagnostic imaging, and electron microscopy.Students must finish all these subspecialties and practice in the university animal hospital before their graduation. To facilitate teaching and research, the Department also establishes laboratories equipped with the state-of-art research facilities.With respect to research activities, the recent focuses include public health, zoonotic diseases, and applications of molecular biology to disease diagnosis and prevention.


Department of Agricultural Economics

¡@The Department of Agricultural Economics offers an interdisciplinary program that combines agriculture, economics, and natural resources management. At this moment the Department encompasses ten domains: production management, marketing operation, property policy, economic analysis, quantitative econometric computation, industry development, international trade, statistic analysis, finance, and natural resource environment. Emphasizing on theory and practice, the Department aims at training professionals in the management of agricultural resource and production technology. The Department acquires the most up-to-date equipment to facilitate research and teaching, and it holds conferences in the hope of elevating the quality of the local agricultural-economic research.


Department of Horticulture

¡@The Department of Horticulture offers programs for students to specialize in horticultural sciences. The curricula offered include the production and improvement of fruit, vegetable and ornamental crops, postharvest technology, processing, biotechnology, and landscape horticulture. To provide students and faculty members an appropriate environment for study and research, the Department establishes greenhouses, experimental farms, and a number of well-equipped laboratories.With the modern facilities and diversified curricula, students will be able to engage in research, teaching and extension services and to make contributions to the development and management of the horticultural industry.


Department of Agricultural Extension

¡@The Department of Agricultural Extension aims at training specialists of educational communication and administrative management.The Department prepares a modern audio-visual studio and a computer room to facilitate instruction and research. The focus of instruction and research falls on extension strategies, rural development planning, organization management, educational communication, rural community welfare, and rural environment protection.Students are required to engage in extension practices at various institutions during summer vacations to receive more practical knowledge and to acquire working experience.


Department of Bio-Industrial Mechatronics Engineering

¡@The Department of Bio-Industrial Mechatronics Engineering provides disciplines including mechanical engineering, electronics & controls, and information technology.The major research areas of the Department are (1) Machinery and Systems (2) Measurement and Controls and (3) Materials and Processes.Aiming at accelerating the industrialization and automation of the bio-industrial industry, the Department will strive to enhance the integration of the industry and the interdisciplinary integration as well.Meanwhile, the Department will encourage the research on bio-industrial engineering and promote its application.


Institute of Food Science and Technology

¡@The Institute of Food Science and Technology encompasses three divisions: Food Science Division, Food Technology Division, and Health and Nutrition Division.Focusing on training specialists to advance the local development of food sciences and technology, the Institute encourages research activities and the collaboration with the industry.Currently, the Institute plans to start ¡§Research and DevelopmentCenter for Foods with High Additional Value.¡¨This organization is intended to assist local farming organizations in applying the latest technology and research result and hence to improve the industry of food science.


Experimental Farm

¡@The Experimental Farm assists all departments and graduate institutes in the College of Bio-Resources and Agriculture in teaching, research, practical training, and management demonstration. Every year nearly 4,800 students join the production of dairy product, processed meat, and pastry, and the products are sold through two centers on campus.In recent years, the Farm actively participates in the improvement of the campus landscape. As a branch of extensive education, the Farm is opened to high school and primary school students for field trips or training camps. Special forums are also offered to the citizens. An ecological garden is currently planned for the promotion of ecological education.


Experimental Forest Headquarter

¡@The Experimental Forest, with a headquarter located at Chu-Shan Town, Nan-Tou County, aims at developing four major tasks: the academic research, the teaching and field practices, the environmental conservation, and the demonstration of forest management.Abundant in plant species and wildlife resources, the ExperimentalForest provides a splendid environment not just for research but also for social education.To cope with the socio-economic development and the principles of sustaining the forest ecosystem, the Experimental Forest focuses on following aspects: (1) increasing the biological diversity (2) protecting the endangered species (3) conserving the soil and water resource (4) improving the environment and the quality of citizen recreation (5) enhancing research on the community forestry industry (6) increasing the efficiency of the natural resources distribution and utilization (7) providing a comprehensive ecological information system.


National Taiwan University Animal Hospital

¡@Since the opening of the new building in 1995, NationalTaiwanUniversityAnimalHospital has become the largest and the most equipped VeterinaryHospital in Southeastern Asia. The Hospital is an organization with multiple functions.Except the clinical services the Hospital also assists the College of Bio-Resources and Agriculture in education and research.The Hospital provides the place for the students in the Department of Veterinary Medicine to practice what they learn in the classroom.Many joined research projects are also carried out here.Through these activities, the Hospital hopes to advance the education, research, and the clinical techniques of veterinary medicine.


Highland Experimental Farm

¡@The Highland Experimental Farm is located in Ren-ai Xiang, Nan-touCounty.The total area of the Farm measures 1092 hectares, and it consists of three areas: Dou-Luo-Wan Zone, Chun-Yang Sub-Farm, and Mei-Feng Main-farm.The altitude of the Farm ranges from 900 to 2,700 meters; the climate zone it covers ranges from the subtropical to the temperate zone.Encompassing abundant living things and ecosystems, the Farm cultivates the temperate fruit trees, flowers, and highland vegetables for the purpose of teaching, research and demonstration.In the recent years, the Farm strives to enhance the ecological education and to advocate the conservation of highland resource through holding demonstration and camps.


Agricultural Exhibition Hall

¡@The Agricultural Exhibition Hall was established in 1964 for demonstrating the achievement of Land Reform Programs and the development of Taiwan¡¦s agriculture and rural area.The content of exhibition are frequently modified to reflect the changes in the development.The recent exhibition emphasizes on illustrating and advocating the sustainable agricultural development, green industry, and their impacts on quality of life.


Education & Research Center for Agricultural Automation

¡@The Education & ResearchCenter for Agricultural Automation (ERCAA) was founded in 1992. The purpose of the center is to promote research projects and to assist the professional trainings of the automation of agriculture.ERCAA provides mechatronics facilities, licensed software, and other research equipment to students and faculty members in the College.Moreover, the Center offers space for teaching and practical training.More than 25 routine courses, seminars and training programs are held every year.ERCAA hopes to cultivate promising specialists on the manufacture, research, and extension of agriculture.


The Hydrotech Research Institute

¡@The Hydrotech Research Institute (HRI) is officially founded in 1997.It consists of three sections: Teaching, Research, and Extension Services.HRI has been dedicated for years to advance the local development of hydroscience.In addition to providing instruction and extension assistance, HRI continuously works on promoting the hydraulic and fluid-mechanic experiments and on publishing research reports.


The Agricultural Extension Committee

¡@The main purpose of Agricultural Extension Committee is to advance the communication between academia and industry.The Committee publishes a bi-monthly newsletter and Extension Manuals to report the latest research.Nonetheless, the Committee organizes workshops and panel discussions to achieve more direct communication with the public.Through these efforts, the Committee makes great contributions to the rural and agricultural development.
